How long have you been hosting your show?
A: I’ve been part of the rotation of hosts on Sunday Folks since October of 2016. In 2023 I premiered Soul Folks in January. Soul Folks is a weekly show heard on Monday evening that bridges the diversity of 21st century Folk music with the songs that inspired a movement. In this case, the civil rights movement. This week (December 9th) KBCS broadcasts the 100th installment of Soul Folks. THANK YOU MIKE!
What song or album do you most identify with, which inspired your energy to be a DJ?
A: Let’s go back to the beginning. The first record I ever purchased was in November of 1966. “Pushin’ Too Hard” by The Seeds. Sky Saxon, lead singer of The Seeds would draw the attention of Nancy Reagan during her White House years. Let’s just say I started off interested in Alternative music and never looked back.
Your most recent concert:
A: For this year, 2024, I took up a challenge from my twenty-something nephew. He proposed that if he went to a concert per week (52) I could equal his output by going to a concert per month (12)…. I hit my goal on November 6th when I was part of the audience treated to a wonderfully energetic show by Willie Watson. In fact if there is a folk/americana/country show at the Tractor Tavern, and it’s a weeknight…. Look for me, I might be there!
Recent Feature film or a Favorite film:
A: I’m a fan of vintage cinema, Film Noir for sure. In fact the ONLY television show I watch on a regular basis is TCM’s “Noir Alley”. Billy Wilder’s 1944 film “Double Indemnity” is a particular favorite. With Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray in a story written by James M. Cain. I often wonder how much Walter Neff there is in each of us.
Favorite Album of 2024:
A: Kaia Kater’s “Strange Medicine”. Strong writing infused with sparse yet powerful instrumentation.
What album do you love or really enjoy that might surprise your listeners?
A: My wife and I like to listen to music during dinner. We usually gravitate towards a piano trio or vocalist from the late 50’s/early 60’s. This year I was able to find, on vinyl, both of the albums done by Tony Bennett and Bill Evans. “The Tony Bennett Bill Evans Album” was rereleased this year. And “Together Again” I found at an Antique mall.
Pen, typewriter, computer, device: -please elaborate why-
Pencil? I keep a pencil and notebook at my computer side. Anything I develop into an idea for my shows, or other pursuits usually starts out as a scribble in this notebook. I think it has a way of slowing things down in order to contemplate more clearly.
Again, THANK YOU MIKE!
