Sonali Kolhatkar: Breaking ICE — The Frontline of Community Resistance at Town Hall Seattle

About the Event

Throughout America, communities face increasingly aggressive immigration enforcement. ICE has vastly expanded its presence, arrests, and deportations under the Trump Administration — and has caused the deaths of American citizens. In response, communities across the country have organized to resist, protect their neighbors, and challenge what many call an authoritarian crackdown.

Sonali Kolhatkar reports on this resistance from the ground level. Her new book "Breaking ICE: Community Defense Against State Terror and MAGA Fascism" is a vivid account of the growing movement against state violence. It features interviews with organizers, lawyers, artists, labor leaders, and scholars documenting how communities from Maine to California are fighting back. Kolhatkar's reporting asserts that what happens now will determine whether the future of the United States looks like an open multiracial democracy or a fascist police state.

Sonali Kolhatkar is an award-winning multimedia journalist and host of Rising Up With Sonali, a weekly television and radio program airing on Free Speech TV and Pacifica Radio stations across the United States. She is also the author of Talking About Abolition: A Police Free World Is Possible and Rising Up: The Power of Narrative in Pursuing Racial Justice. She has won numerous awards including Best TV Anchor and Best National Political Commentary from the LA Press Club.

Josefina Mora-Cheung

Josefina Mora-Cheung is a born and raised Seattleite and the daughter of Mexican immigrants. They are Director of Organizing for La Resistencia after eleven years as a volunteer, supporting on-the-ground campaigns, media, policy work, and community development. Outside of their organizing work, Josefina is an active member of Rat City Roller Derby and Fuego Latino Roller Derby.
