A powerful free exhibit is now on view at Seattle Public Library's Central Library. It explores Legal Financial Obligations in Washington State. Living with Conviction: Sentenced to Debt for Life in Washington State runs through Saturday July 26th, 2026. Find it on Level 8 in the Gallery.

About the Exhibit

Notably, Washington State courts sentence people not only to prison but also to a lifetime of debt. Living with Conviction confronts this reality head on. The project uses multimedia storytelling and community conversations to raise awareness. It advocates for an end to crippling court-imposed costs, fees, fines, and restitution. These are commonly referred to as Legal Financial Obligations or LFOs.

The exhibit goes beyond polarizing headlines and statistics. It shines a light on this injustice by sharing stories of our common humanity. The project is presented in partnership with Living with Conviction and sponsored by the Seattle Public Library Foundation.

Why This Matters

Legal Financial Obligations affect thousands of Washington State residents long after their prison sentences end. Court-imposed debt follows people home, limiting their ability to rebuild their lives, support their families, and participate fully in their communities. Living with Conviction puts faces and stories to those numbers.
