An African diaspora festival is coming to Bellevue College on Saturday, May 17th from 2 to 6pm. The Sawubona Cross-Cultural Festival is free, open to all, and rooted in a powerful idea. "Sawubona" is a Zulu phrase meaning "I see you", a greeting that recognizes and honors every person's humanity and value.
What is Sawubona?
Sawubona is more than a festival. It is a gathering anchored in the Zulu philosophy of mutual recognition. The event brings together diverse communities of color to share the energy, traditions, and cultures of the African diaspora in the Pacific Northwest. This intergenerational celebration weaves together performance, visual art, food, and community education into one vibrant afternoon.
What to Expect at This African Diaspora Festival
The festival features a wide range of programming for all ages. Highlights include a ceremonial procession of flags representing nations of the African continent, main stage live music and dance performances, a community marketplace spotlighting local BIPOC-owned businesses, a Health and Wellness Fair with free resources and screenings from African Americans Reach and Teach Health Ministry, and a Children's Corner.
