Happy Halloween to our devoted listeners and supporters, from all your friends at KBCS,

Halloween seems to have become the most popular holiday for many people. In our neighborhood, the neighbors have gone to great lengths to decorate their homes and front lawns with purple lights, animated skeletons, ghosts, giant spider webs, and tombstones, much to the delight of all the younger kids eagerly awaiting the big candy day. On Halloween, they dress up in scary costumes or as their favorite superheroes and go door to door begging for treats or threatening their neighbors with tricks if the candy is not forthcoming. These youngsters are adorable, and my wife and I eagerly look forward to the next doorbell ringing to announce their arrival.

KBCS is getting in the Halloween spirit this year and will broadcast at the stroke of midnight on Halloween the historic original 1938 radio drama, “Dracula,” featuring the legendary Orson Welles and his famous “Mercury Theatre on the Air.” This renowned broadcast from the early years of radio drama will kick off a new weekly historical radio series, “The KBCS Retro Radio Theatre,” to be heard on Friday nights at midnight on KBCS. Join your local host, Levi Sweeney, who appears as Jack Newman for his expertly curated collection of the best of old-time radio suspense and mystery dramas from the 1930s and 1940s. Levi is a current Bellevue College student eager to share his passion for old-time radio with our many listeners and supporters.

Another Bellevue College student, Bradford Ozuk, is now hosting our weekday broadcast of the Thom Hartmann progressive talk radio call-in show on KBCS. “The Thom Hartmann Show” is broadcast live Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to noon on KBCS and allows our listeners to call in and sound off on the most critical issues of the day with other listeners nationwide. Before coming to KBCS to work as our new morning host, Brad was the editor of “The Watchdog,” the Bellevue College student newspaper, for two years. Brad is a quick learner and thoroughly enjoys this opportunity to develop a new skill set that suits him well.

Several other college students work mainly behind the scenes to expand our station promotions and upgrade our contemporary digital media presence. In upcoming newsletters, we will provide more detailed profiles of these exceptional and talented student workers and their vital work to help KBCS expand our listenership and prepare this fifty-year-old noncommercial educational broadcasting tradition for the exciting all-digital future of noncommercial radio broadcasting.

I hope that in the “spirit” of this fun Halloween holiday, you can help support our nonprofit educational mission with a special treat to support and expand our community radio outreach and to bring you the fantastic music, news, and educational programs you love to listen to.

Remember, you can donate online anytime at our safe and secure website, www.kbcs.fm. You can make a lump sum one-time donation to KBCS or sign up for a monthly sustainer donation.

Best Wishes and Happy Halloween!
