January 10, 2025 - 3:00 pm

Join us every Sunday to hear the sounds of Sunday’s Hornpipe at 3pm on 91.3 KBCS with John Gibaut. Thank you, John for being a part of the KBCS family and keeping local radio thriving in the Seattle area. John provided us details about his life, how he became interested in Celtic music, and how he got involved with community radio at KBCS.

About John

John was born on the Island of Jersey, a British Crown Dependency in the English Channel. The Island had a great folk club and many of the folk artists plying their trade in the 1970’s visited the Island. The Boys of the Lough were frequent visitors, as were many other Celtic artists from Scotland, Ireland and Brittany in north-west France.

Discovering Celtic Music

His interest in and enjoyment of Celtic music increased when he went to college in England. He saw many of the great Celtic Bands of the era: De Dannan; Clannad; Silly Wizard; The Chieftains; and Horslips, to name a few. Never did he think, at the time, that he would host a show dedicated to Celtic music. In the modern era he finds inspiration in the music of Lunasa, Duncan Lyall, and Duncan Chisholm, to name but three. The latter musician’s sharing of ‘one tune a day’ for a whole year during the pandemic at the beginning of the decade brought joy into John’s life every day.

Joining Community Radio at KBCS

In 2002 he immigrated to the US and settled near Seattle with his wife, Robin. He soon found 91.3 KBCS on the radio. After regularly volunteering during pledge drives, and after retiring, he trained to become a DJ and was invited to join the Sunday’s Hornpipe team by the hosts at the time, Kevin O’Connor and Mary Kelly. On January 10, 2016, he hosted his first show and has never looked back. Since August 2020 he has been the sole host of Sunday’s Hornpipe. He hopes you enjoy listening to the show as much as he enjoys putting it together for you.

‘Dance as if no one is watching, sing as if no one is listening, and live everyday as if it were your last’, an old Irish proverb.
