About The Artists
Rose City Band
Rose City Band launched in 2019 as the project of Portland guitarist and vocalist Ripley Johnson, known for his work with space rock acts Wooden Shjips and Moon Duo. The band features pedal steel guitarist Barry Walker, keyboardist Paul Hasenberg, and drummer John Jeffrey, whose playing enmeshes rhythmic drive and melody with sumptuous, gentler atmospheres. Rose City Band's music is sun-kissed timeless country rock whose seemingly effortless momentum carries the joy of its creation without ignoring the darkness pervading our consciousness.
Their most recent album Sol Y Sombra — Spanish for "sun and shadow", finds the band at their most emotionally honest. Like many genre-breaking private press albums, the melancholia-infused Sol Y Sombra's contrasts equally enhance moments of joy and movement whilst elevating the music with its honesty and intimacy.
Serafima and the Shakedowns
Serafima and the Shakedowns are a Seattle five-piece playing what frontwoman Serafima calls "hunky tonk" — a blend of Golden Age of Radio, honky tonk, and Russian folk with wry, honest lyrics about life as a young woman in modern America. The band features Sam Burrows on guitar, Joe McPhee on bass, Jules Tennyson on drums, and Finn O'Hea on trumpet, with Serafima on vocals and rhythm guitar.
Their debut full-length Ride Easy is out now. KBCS listeners caught Serafima live on air on May 1st.
