Climate Lawsuit: Juliana v. U.S.

February 5th, 2018 was the scheduled trial date for the constitutional climate lawsuit, Juliana v. U.S., to be heard in the U.S. District Court of Oregon, but for now the trial is on hold. KBCS’s Yuko Kodama spoke with Aji Piper, one of the youth plaintiffs in the case. He shares why he joined the case.

Lawsuit Against the Northwest Detention Center

On September 20th, Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced a lawsuit against the GEO Group, the second-largest private prison provider in the country, which operates the Northwest Detention Center. The state’s lawsuit asks the court to order the company to give up the profits netted from paying detainees up to one dollar a day for their work in the detention center.

KBCS’s Yuko Kodama caught Maru Mora Villalpando, community organizer of Northwest Detention Center Resistance, on the phone to talk about the conditions regarding work inside the Northwest Detention Center, for its detainees.

Seattle’s Sanctuary City Lawsuit

What does Seattle’s lawsuit against the Trump administration mean for us? On March 29th, 2017, the city of Seattle filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for threatening to withhold federal grant money from cities like Seattle, who don’t comply with enforcing federal immigration laws.
