Join KBCS in celebrating Sunday evening’s The Real Folk host, Richard Gillman during our Dj Appreciation Spotlight.

Introduction

I started at KBCS in 1997 as one of the five weekday hosts of Lunch With Folks.  I had been a volunteer for the Seattle Folklore Society and Northwest Folklife.  After Lunch With Folks ended, I had a show on KBCS called The Outskirts, and since 2020 The Real Folk, every Sunday evening 6 to 8pm.
Soon after I started at KBCS I found I wanted to know what artists were popular on folk radio, so I wrote a computer program to generate charts.  You can view the charts at https://nwfolk.com/charts/ – don’t worry it’s free.  Folk Alliance International has given me the Friends of Folk award twice for my charts.

Inspiration

What is folk music? To me, it’s acoustic music with an emphasis on traditional music, songwriting and storytelling, plus music from various cultures. Genres include contemporary singer/songwriter, bluegrass, old-time, Celtic, blues, roots, Americana, and more.  I love to hear music in small coffee houses, church basements and house concerts (Seattle has many such places!) where I can hear the music up close to the artists.
