At 91.3 KBCS, we pride ourselves on being a home for voices that tell stories from every journey. This week, we shine our spotlight on Hip Hop Knuckles’ host, Nje, who embodies this mission perfectly. Late night Saturdays, from 11 pm to midnight, Nje transforms the airwaves into a global crossroads of sound.

Establishment

His story begins in Kenya, where he was born and raised, deeply immersed in a vibrant music scene. For over twenty years, he has been a driving force as a music producer, performing artist, and the owner of Ufuoni Records (Ufuoni meaning “Seashore” in Swahili). His commitment to music extends beyond the studio, organizing charity concerts and events throughout East Africa. Now living in the United States, Nje brings that worldly perspective to his KBCS show. He is on a continuous mission to explore and understand the diverse tapestry of global Hip Hop culture, all while sharing the sounds that inspire him. His style is rooted in conscious, underground Hip Hop and Reggae, a space where powerful, positive messages are paramount.

Inspiration

He finds inspiration in the poetic consciousness of artists like Nas, whose album Distant Relatives serves as a touchstone for the kind of music he champions. What makes Nje’s show so vital is his dedication to the unheard. As a producer, he specifically targets underground artists who have never had the chance to get airplay. Hip Hop Knuckles is a launchpad for the raw, authentic voices that often exist just below the mainstream surface. His musical compass is set by the albums that changed his life, like Dead Prez’s revolutionary Let’s Get Free, and by the live experiences that reaffirm his love for the culture, like seeing The Wutang Clan & Nas bring the full energy of ’90s Hip Hop to the stage.

Nje, we are incredibly grateful for the energy and heart you pour into Hip Hop Knuckles. Thank you for being a bridge between continents, a champion for underground artists, and a powerful voice for positivity on our airwaves. Join us in celebrating Nje! Tune in to Hip Hop Knuckles every Saturday night at 11 pm and discover the pulse of the global underground. You can also explore more of his work and productions on his YouTube Music Channel, Nje Pro.
