About Jon Cleary and The Bywater Sessions
After thirty-five years at the forefront of New Orleans music, two-time Grammy winner Jon Cleary decided to bring that sound back home — literally. He assembled his Absolute Monster Gentlemen in his home studio in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans, drew up a setlist of beloved songs and new favorites, and rolled tape.
The result is The Bywater Sessions, co-produced with John Porter — known for his work with Roxy Music, The Smiths, and Taj Mahal. Rolling Stone’s David Fricke once described the band as “as broad, deep and rolling as the Mississippi River.” This record captures exactly that — live, in the room, and as funky as ever. The band joining Cleary in Seattle includes Cornell Williams on bass and vocals, Pedro Segundo on percussion, and Thomas Glass on drums.
Jon Cleary’s Road to New Orleans
Born in London, Cleary was on a plane to New Orleans before he turned twenty. He grew up absorbed by the sounds and rhythms of the Crescent City. His mastery of the city’s music landed him gigs with local legends Earl King, Johnny Adams, Walter Wolfman Washington, Snooks Eaglin, Ernie K-Doe, Jessie Hill, and Dr. John. He later toured extensively with Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal. His solo career began in 1989 and includes his 2015 Grammy-winning Go-Go Juice.
Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley is a family-owned Seattle institution bringing jazz to the city since 1979. Every seat sits within 50 feet of the stage. Dining is optional. All sets are all ages. Free parking is available at Amazon’s Doppler Garage on 6th between Virginia and Lenora — no validation required. Find the full calendar at jazzalley.com.
