KBCS presents an excerpt of the new local podcast Ways of Awe. Created in Seattle by writers and translators Maia Brown and Shelby Handler, Ways of Awe is a “queer anti-Zionist audio companion for the Jewish High Holidays,” the period of time in the Jewish calendar between the holidays of Rosh Hashanah (which was last week) and Yom Kippur (coming up on Monday).

Shelby and Maia met through Palestine solidarity organizing and started this project to share their collaborative, poetic translations of ancient Jewish texts, because, as Shelby explains, “in this time where the fascists literally want us spun around, distracted and fractured, we think that working with sound and ancient text demands our close attention.”

Listen to an excerpt from Ways of Awe about the Jewish prayer Al Cheyt, and what it can teach us about mistakes and forgiveness.

“There is no more ignoring that we are inextricably linked to one another. During rising fascism, ongoing pandemic, genocide in Gaza: the choices we make for ourselves are also choices made for our communities, even if we can’t see the droplet travel or the message carry.”

Ways of Awe is hosting a launch party at Jack Straw Cultural Center in Seattle this Saturday September 19 at 6:30 pm. Learn more here.
